The evaluation

My group has based our horror trailer around the sub-genre slasher; we have chosen this because we felt like this was the only one that mainly appealed to more off a wider range of audiences so effectively we could get more people watching it.  We have chosen the slahser because it contains a lot of violence and a mysterious and it is imaginary way of killing which leaves the audience in suspense. We also felt like this subgenre was more effective because we do not need much advanced effects and technology to make it a good trailer but, this subgenre also comes with disadvantages which is that we have to use fake knifes and less appealing costumes if we have not used it in a appropriate way we could lose some audiences. However, the other subgenres would have been harder and would have had needed a much more advanced and complicated story line. Through the filming production process, my role was to be the slasher and also the main character, I volunteered to take this role because I feel that I preform best and this role and it enables me to get the best out of me. In addition, I also chose this role because I am confident in acting skills I wanted to make a major contribution in my group activity. I am also have another job in the group is that after we fully finish out filming I would be one of the main people who edit the trailer. During school time we planned and researched other trailers that involved a slahser and tried to find a trailer that was based around Halloween. I researched locations and how to structure a trailer as in what clips to include and what not to include. The genre of trailer is horror; we researched horror and the meaning of it this was because we wanted to get the full jest about the whole project. The things I know about the theme horror before we looked into it is that it is as an intense feeling of two main feelings which are fear and shock. As I said before we looked at many trailers which influenced us at some point in the trailer and they was ‘Mama’, ‘Scream’ and ‘The Exorcist’. The pre-production process; we done this by splitting up all the tasks between our group. I took the role of researching trailers and finding the ideal connotations to use. The filming went well because we had planned it beforehand so we was not stuck when the teacher gave us the camera, we made a storyboard to plan out every scene we also searched locations  in where to locate the scene so it could be good for the right acting and right location however, we did not go to all of the locations that we suggested if we had of done it could have been a more of a higher quality trailer next time we make another trailer we need to go to the locations we have suggested before so save time which we needed. We also planned to do it when it went dark because most horror trailers happen in the dark or in the early hours of the day but when we edited the clips and added effects the scene went darker so you could not actually see what was going on. We could improve the way my group worked by having all of my group with us when we did film this is because we couldn’t get all of the scenes done so we could off had more to work with rather than a small quantity. Also during the shot we could have improved it by during in when it was day light because then we could have edited the scene and made it look like it was at night however we didn’t know this so we shot our trailer during the night so in the trailer you can’t really see what is going on. The music we chose was only one that plays throughout the trailer we thought we should do this because its more effective and it is a convention of a horror trailer. Overall I think my group did well because we all worked together to make a good trailer and we took our work outside of the class room e.g. we filmed outside of the school premises so we did well in these areas however it could have been better if we had all of our group with us when we did film also I think our group did well because we went our way to make our trailer good and we tried to get top marks for it and we all helped each other in order to get this.  The favorite shot in trailer for me is when there’s a close up of me in the costume and son after there is the same shot by just flipped also the sound effect that was used created a scary moment. We didn’t try to break any horror conventions because we thought if we had all the main convention a horror trailer; we normally see and import it into ours we would get more viewers to watch it and it would be more effective also we did a lot of research on the main horror conventions so it was easy for us to import into within our trailer. How social group was teenagers we chose to do this because they are more protective of each other and plus they are girls so there priority was to keep each other safe although if we had boys it would break one of the conventions of horror trailers because men are more of the stronger than the girls. The killer was presented as a boy teenager this was because killers are often the boys rather than the girls also it was more interesting to have the boy do it. Our main target audience were young teenagers our trailer was successful in reaching them because all the characters within our trailer were teenagers too so it makes the audience wonder if this could happen to them on a normal day out to the park and it was more realistic to reach them as we are teenagers our self. The main lesson I learn from making the trailer is that to make more time planning it and to have more than one sheet of a story board so when we go out to film we can get started rather than thinking what to do next.

yahaea evaluation

Yahaea's Evaluation

After lots dissuasion with our group we have finally decided that we are going to do horror thriller with sub-genre slasher is a mysterious psychopathic killer stalking and killing a sequence of victims usually in a graphically violent manner, often with a cutting tool such as a knife etc. Our filming was really good because the role we had everyone was happy with it  example I was the director and camera man this is because I am really good at instructing people what to do and I am also good at recording thing and also good at editing.  We all enjoyed filming outside the school because we all have contributed to make this film good as possible and we have chosen some excellent location which really goes with our horror shooting which were dark street, park and buildings.

Our horror genre is slasher because we think that this would match to our target audience and also this would be the easy one to do because we only have some costumes for slashes and if we were doing something else this would be really hard for us to provide costumes etc.

We were influenced by Halloween horror thrillers because we are doing a Halloween thriller and the reason we were influenced is the way they have used long and close up shot to catch there emotion and the way they dressed costumes up as for a Halloween and start killing people with knife etc. without knowing that the they are a killer. We have taken these ideas and put from Halloween thrillers and have made it in our own. Our thriller is completely different from Halloween thrillers because it’s our own thriller it’s got our own twist which makes it more effective to our thriller. We have planned a story board step by step which shows us that what part goes where and we can film it however we want but later we can edit it and put them in order so this can help us save time because if we wane film in order this will take lot of time which mean we won’t be able to finish our filming on time that can affects us not finishing the thriller.
Our group filming went really well because we have worked really well in a group which helped us to do much filming as possible this can give us more option of choosing the best one. Everyone in the group was taken a role this was very effective because we didn’t have tell them what to do. We can improve by making the right decision where we are going to film so the location is very important to choose. We can improve by filming the same shoot 5-6 times which will give us option to choose the best one and also make sure that everyone has got do something in the group.

I think my grouped has work very well beginning  to the end  which made it so much easy for us to complete our work on time and when we filming they all took part in a role on the other hand if we didn’t work well we wouldn’t be finish anything overall which can affect our own individual grades. My favourite part of the thriller is when the killer turned his face to the camera quick and then we have edit this in something scary which makes our thriller really good. Our Behaviour was really good because when we filming we were sensible and we knew that we have to work together and not break the rules. We represented the character by making him were mask which covered his face so no one couldn’t see him, at the end we revile the killer but no one knows who is the killer is so this makes more interesting. The target audience for our trailer 'Anonymous' this is teenagers and young adults who want an adrenaline rush from being fearful or even scared by the trailer. Overall we are happy with our thriller because we all have worked hard in filming and editing which can get us all good individual grades.

Questionnaire & Gender In Slashers

Gender in slasher films is often debated about. The generic convention for the role of females in a slasher film is that they are often the victims and are portrayed to be in terror for a long period of time and they either die or survive. Our trailer followed this convention because our victim was Faisa who was portrayed as vulnerable and fearful of the killer. The killer in many slasher films is a male who is masked and often very strong, making it almost impossible to kill him. This emphasises the weakness of the female victim and the vulnerability. It is incredibly rare to come across a female killer. Our killer was a male who was portrayed as strong and big in the trailer.

Our group believed there are many stereotypes present in horror slasher films. Also, the women are almost everytime the victims and are always being abused and killed which portrays women as weak. However, not all films present women in a weak and vulnerable way for example films characters like Lara Croft. Additionally, men are also shown stereotypically in slasher films as they are often the killers in slasher movies which portrays them as violent killers. We chose to follow these roles to make our audience more aware of these stereotypes and how they can work against them.

Faisa's evaluation.

 The evaluation.

Our group know what we’d like to expect out of a horror trailer, this has helped us to share our ideas and make this trailer an exciting one. My role was to be the person who chooses the props and where we were going to film; so I had to decide the perfect location for our trailer. I was also one of the actors this has helped me to play a big part in this trailer also helped me to get a good grade. I have been doing some work on our group blog so far I have completed our locations, script and all the health and safety issues we decided to make our trailer a slasher; this is because it will go perfectly with our target audience of teenagers. As we are teenagers ourselves we would have to face. This has helped me to gain a good knowledge of how a trailer would be made also gave our group the opportunity to share all our ideas and do each a part on blog individually.

Knowing allot about the horror genre has helped me to know what to expect whilst filming. Doing a horror film I’d know that you’d need it to scare your audience, you’d need to film in places that are dark and mysterious for example a park at night time this gives the frightening effect on our audience this is why we have chosen to film at a park when it’s dark.  I also know that you’d need some sort of villain/murderer; that’s why we have choses for there to be a killer who goes around killing people. You would also nee victims who get killed or get hurt in some way. This is all the conventions you’d need to prepare a horror film. My group used all these things this has helped us to make a horror film an effective one, one that our target audience will really enjoy.  My group were inspired by the movie ‘scream’ which is a sub-genre of a slasher we will also use some of the elements used here in our own, this is why we named our trailer 'the anonymous'. we named our trailer the anonymous because the killer is wearing a mask so no-one would know who it is this also links to ur sub-genre of a slasher. using the movie scream to inspire us will make its easier for us to use the elements used in that trailer to make ours just as good.  We planned our trailer by splitting the roles up within our group we done this buy having me as the one who chooses the props and costumes, locations and one of the actors. We had Naimah as the one with the creative input and do all the research also one of the actors. Waseem was the group leader and an actor and finally Yahaea was the director and camera man. By taking different roles this has helped us to do some extra work individually and post it on our blog, before we done anything we’d have a discussion and decide on the best ideas and then take different roles individually. We also done a story board and created our pitch and how it would look when we would film. Before we done all of this we had a booklet each called the production booklet this has helped us to gain an idea of what we would be doing as we start to plan and film. Our group has started filming; we still have some left to complete. However I would say that the filming was really good we got most of the footage we needed and this will help us

to make our trailer the best.  We could’ve improved our filming by filming when it wasn’t too dark; the camera we were using did not have good quality this makes it hard for us to watch over and not have a clear view of what is happening. This also helps us know that next time we should do it when it’s not too dark. We faced some problems whilst editing. One problem we faced was making the scene lighter so we could see what was going on. Deciding what soundtrack we were going to use for our trailer was easy because we watched allot of trailers beforehand and used the track we like from some. The track we used is called ‘scary music’. We chose this track specifically because the beat which comes with it gives the audience excitement whilst watching it and this is the sort of affect we want to have on our audience.

To conclude, I believe that our trailer was good but not great there are still things that we could improve on; for example some scenes are too dark to see what’s actually going on. My favourite shot from our trailer is when the killer does a double turn around, this is because it shocks the audience when they see a repeat of the same shot. We did not break any horror conventions because we wanted to follow the rules of how to make a trailer with all the conventions we needed. We linked our trailer to teenagers we done this by showing us going out and living the normal teenage life; this will help us link our trailer to our target audience effectively. Our killer was shown as a serial stabber we done this by following all the conventions; for example in our trailer the killer would always be dressed up so no one would know who he is until they watch the film this encourages our target audience to go watch the film.  I believe our trailer was successful enough to reach our target audience because our victims were teenagers so our audience could relate to them. Finally, the main lessons I took from filming was that; in the future I would know how to use a camera for a sort film also how to edit it and add all the things you would need for a film. This has helped me gain another skill of using different camera shots.

Naimah's Evaluation

The Evaluation

Our group decided to base our trailer on the sub-genre of slasher. This was because our target audience are teenagers and slashers appeal to teenagers because this age group is often featured in these movies as protagonists.  Also, this sub- genre contains a lot of violence and blood which appeals to the young audience. During the production process, my role was to input creative ideas into the trailer and research the media for inspiration for our trailer. During the filming, I was an actress and featured in several scenes. To make full use of our lesson time, we research other horror trailers to gain some ideas and researched into the sub-genre of slasher so we understood what the generic conventions were so we could include them in our trailer. We also worked on our blogs during lesson time to plan our trailer and update any filming evaluations on the blog. This helped us during our filming time because we were reflective on our work and understood what was successful and what needed to be improved.

We researched our sub-genre of slasher thoroughly and found out that there are many conventions within this sub-genre. We included several of these conventions in our trailer such as having a psychotic masked killer who kills a group of young adults. During the end, the killer is always unmasked and viewers get to find out who the killer is and we used this convention in our trailer. Another generic convention is that the weapon of choice is often some sort of blade. We used a knife as our weapon of choice in the trailer to fit with this convention. The American slasher movie ‘Scream’ influenced our trailer because it fitted with our chosen sub-genre and we both had the same target audience. We were influenced by the scenes in ‘Scream’ of the serial killer killing the young girl and chasing her. We liked this scene because it was exciting and got the viewers engaged into the scene. It also makes the trailer more thrilling. During the pre-production, I researched existing slasher trailers to help plan for our trailer and get some ideas and inspiration. I also produced a working title for the trailer to engage viewers and this gave me a better understanding of our trailer because I was able to summarise it in a couple of sentences. Moreover, I helped produce a storyboard of our trailer. This was helpful because it gave our group a visual understanding of how our trailer will take place and what will happen in it. Our filming was successful because we included many different shots such as point of view shots and tracking shots which made the trailer more exciting and engaging. Our trailer was mostly based outside of school which could have been a problem however we overcame this by spending our lesson time evaluating and researching. This allowed us to be more independent. Some problems we faced during our filming was coming up with ideas of what to film and sticking to the concept of the trailer. We decided on sound effects by listening to other trailers to get some ideas about what sound effects will work well.  We then listened to some music and sound effects together as a group and decided which ones will work best with our trailer. Our trailer is called ' The Annonymous' because our killer is masked therefore he is unknown. We felt that this name will emphasise that the killer can be anyone, usually someone close to you.

Overall, I think our trailer is up to a good standard as we have used many skills to put our trailer together however I think our trailer could be improved too. We worked well as a group which is the main reason why I think we produced a successful trailer. We didn’t break any horror conventions because we wanted to follow the conventions as our target audience is familiar with the conventions and using them will maximise views. Our killer was represented as a serial killer who hides his identity with a white mask and boiler suit. His weapon of choice was a knife which follows the slasher generic conventions.  In our trailer we represented the youth as social able and fun as they were put with their friends and socialising. Our target audience for this trailer is teenagers. I think our trailer was successful in reaching out to our target audience because our victims are teenagers so they can relate to them.  Additionally, our scenes were shot in locations where teenagers hang out such as parks. This will keep teenagers engaged as they will be familiar with the locations and will scare them more as killings are happening in the film where they hang out. To conclude, the main skills I will take away from this filming project is editing skills on a mac which will be extremely useful to me in any future film making, how to engage a target audience and appeal to them through your filming and learning about different camera shots so in future filming I can use these shots to make my filming more interesting with a variety of camera angles.

Research on a trailer

During our filming and editing, we watched various trailers to get some ideas of camera shots and angles we could use in our own trailer and how evaluated how effective they were. An example of a trailer we watched was Scream. We chose this trailer because our target audience are both males and females and teenagers. Scream has the same target audience therefore the conventions for this trailer will be aimed at our target audience.
We liked this tracking shot of the victim being chased by the killer because it is thrilling and makes the audience alert. We used this shot in our trailer and included a scene of the masked killer chasing its victim and stabbing her.

We found this establishing shot effective because it shows the setting of your trailer and by making the location look mysterious and dark adds to the fear of your trailer. We used this shot in our trailer at the beginning showing the location slowly and clearly.

Evaluation Of Our Filming & Locations

Our group has started some of our filming and there were many good things aswell as improvements which need to be made.

Our trailer is based outside of school therefore there were some complications however we decided to make full use of our time and film some footage in school such as close ups. This was effective because there is less focus on the background when the shot is a close up so our audience will not recognise that it was filmed in school. We filmed shots of Waseem - our main character , in many angles such as establishing shots and close ups. We used close up shots because it allows our audience to see the facial expressions clearer and this will emphasise the fear. We used an establishing shot because it allows our audience to see the costumes clearly.

Waseem Our killer was wearing a costume- a white boiler suit and a white mask. This costume was effective because it was simple which makes it more realistic and scary. We used a mask because it is part of the generic convention of a slasher movie and we wanted to follow these convention. We used a several sounds during our trailer such as dialogue and diegetic sound.

Majority of our footage will be filmed outside of school hours which was inconvenient because we did not have much to do during lesson times. However, this extra time allowed us to work on our blogs and coursework to improve it. In addition, this has also allowed us to be more independant and complete work outside of school.

We filmed at Russel Square Park because it is a popular location for our target audience according to our questionnaire and it is a well known landmark in London so our audience will be familiar with the location.

We filmed at a block in the Brunswick Centre, London. We chose this location because teenagers often hang out in blocks and live there therefore it will add to the fear if things are happening in places that they are familiar with.

Another location we filmed at was a block in Russel Square. We chose this location because it is often where teenagers hang out therefore they will empathise more.

Thriller analyses

Trick 'r Treat is a 2007 American anthology horror film written and directed by Michael Dougherty,I have chosen this movie thriller (TRICK OR TREAT) because I think that this thriller will give us ideas of Halloween horror thriller and I think this is an a great example of horror Halloween thriller, we could us some  of there ideas in our own way, this will be different from the original one because we don’t have the thing they have so we have some sort of costumes that we can use, this horror film inspired me because I think this horror thriller has the thing we might be intrested in to it because this is perfect thriller we   have been looking becasuse this matches to our target audience, which i think this is very good we could relate thing that are in the thriller. Also i like the sound track because this gives a effect on the audience and how they react e.g. is it seacry or not but for me i think this thriller has got the things we would add to our thriller.

Target Audience

Target Audience

The target audience for our trailer ‘Trick or Treat’ this is teenagers and young adults who want an adrenaline rush from being fearful or even scared by the trailer. Also, males that aged 14-35 are most likely to watch our trailer. Most horror films are 18 certificate this shows that the audience must be 18 and over to watch it, hence the film being violent which goes throughout the film but we are going to try to make it 15 certificate because we want to appeal to our hole target audience as we are the same age too; we also have an advantages in making the trailer 15 certificate because our trailer will include a child as a main character but will also have a level of gore into it. However, as we had of mentioned young adults and men the trailer is also aimed at women because the story line is aimed at women. This will more or less attract women to watch it because when they do there are most likely to watch it with a manly person which will boost our views of the trailer.

Audience Profile

The audience that are the younger ages (young teenagers) 'Boys' they will have a lot of interests such as having the weekend to go to the cinema and relax while they have a lot of stress over exams; they go to the cinema to take the stress off they would most likely go to watch a horror film because while watching a horror film they have to have their full attention on the film otherwise they will miss the story line and even the scary bits this draws a lot of attention because when watching a horror film they forget about everything and focus on to the film/trailer like they’re in their own zone which gets them more scared. The teenagers will go the following shops to shop for clothes or to buy accessories … the main shops they will go to is Top man, Zara and Urban Outfitters etc... Also young teenagers that go to the gym because they think they can handle watching it without jumping out of their seats.

For women there interest will be having the intention in going to university as there still young teenagers going into adult hood. They will also like to enjoy being with their friends and listening to music and going to parties and reading books. The artist they will like to listen to are Rihanna, Beyoncé, Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Drake and Usher; there favourite genres will be Indie, alternative rock, urban, rap and hip pop. They will also care about how they mainly look. They will also tend to spend most of their time studying like the boys so they will most likely go out to watch horror films to divert their tension off education. They will also like to shop a lot as they are girls (stereotype) the shops they will shop at is H&M and Top Shop and Miss Selfridge.

Trailer Analysis

                                                    Trailer AnalysisT
The trailer I will be analysing is 'Scream' which is an American slasher film made in 1996.
I have chosen this trailer because it is a well known slasher film and is popular with teenagers and the characters are based on teenagers. The sub-genre of this film is slasher which is the chosen sub-genre for our own trailer. This trailer includes the typical conventions of a slasher film. An example of a generic convention used is the use of a psychotic masked killer stalking a group of young adults and killing them one by one. The choice of weapon is a knife or a machete. The main character is a vulnerable, young girl who has some sort of link or past with the killer. All of these conventions are evident in the Scream trailer.

I like this trailer for many reasons, one of these reasons are the establishing shot that the trailer begings with. I think this shot is effective because the audience are able to see everything in the scene. The makers of this trailer have used this shot effectively by making the mise en scene include scary looking and mysterious things. For example, a large empty house and an empty swing. I like this idea of filming the setting of a house or estate that looks quiet as this creates tension and suspense. The image of a big house has many connotations with murder and mystery.

The use of lighting in this trailer is effective because at points where the level of fear and suspense is high, the lighting is often dark and the focus is on the main character or object of the scene. When the level of tension is low, the lighting is light and ordinary. This is effective because the lighting goes from normal and light and suddenly changes to dark and scary. The mood of the audience will change quickly and this adds and emphasises the shock.

The music and sound effects used in this trailer is dramatic, fearful and fast. It almost symbolises the heart beating fast and the footsteps of a person running. This music is only used half way throughout the trailer when action is present. This is effective because the music used gives the audience an adrenaline rush and makes them feel frightened. The change from normal speech to fast and scary music will shock the audience and emphasise their shock and fear. We will use diegetic sound, dialouge and a voiceover in our own trailer.

music and actors

                                                     Music And Sound Effects

We will get this music by first of all filming the trailer once we have done this and added our effects to it then we can edit the trailer and use appropriate music to get with the rhythm of the trailer and the flow to it. This will build up the tension and would be effective. We will be using instrumentals rather than the actual lyrics because it will be more effective and the audience will not be distracted by the actual music and the instrumentals will draw in other viewers as it might be one of the favourite song but it will an instrumental.

Actors and character roles:

Yahaea – The director and creamer man and editor
He is good at instructing people what to do and he is good at recording thing and also good at editing.

Naimah - Creative input and research and actor
Creative ideas and good knowledge of what will work well in a horror thriller and how we can develop other horror film and adapt it to our video.

Waseem- Group leader and actor

Good at taking the role of a leader and giving instructions. Also, good at making sure everyone gets involved and sticks to their roles.

Faisa- Props, costume and locations and actor

A good knowledge of London and which areas will suit well with our horror thriller. Also a creative mind about what props and costumes will be suitable for our thriller and also she is acting because she has high level acting skills.

sub-genre

                                             Sub-Genre Of Our Trailer

We have chosen the sub-genre of a Slasher because it entitles us to do certain things to make the trailer more realistic and to try accomplishing the outcome of it. It involves us to be; a mysterious psychopathic killer which stalks and also kills a sequence of victims in a violet manner. Usually in horror trailers they use special effects as we are limited to the resources we have, our trailer won be as high standards to theirs. The sub-genre ‘Slasher’ entities us to use a cutting tool such as a knife or axe, as we wont be using these we can easy get hold of fake knifes and an axe which would mean we are safe and not using it for the wrong reasons and would not cause havoc. We also decided to use this sub-genre because it will appeal to our target audience as they often feature in these films as actors. I

Props, Costumes And Equipment

Props And Costumes

The props we will need for the trailer is fake blood, a plastic knife, a white boiler suit and a plain white boiler suit.

We used the scream mask to inspire our trailer and chose a similar mask for our killer. We think that this mask is effective because it is simple and not too complex which will make it more scarier. We masked our killer because it follows the conventions of a slasher and statistics show that in the box office slasher films sell the most. For example, since 1978-present slasher films have had the most sales at the box office (see below) which is why our group felt it was important to follow the conventions of a slasher film.

Our masked killer also was wearing a plain white boiler suit. We chose this costume because we liked the idea of having a simple costume. We had inspiration from the film Halloween and the character of Michael Myers who wears a navy denim boiler suit which looks very effective.

What equipment will you need to make and edit this film?

We will need a creamer and tripod, flip camera, actors, scripts and a location for our horror film. We also need to edit our footage on a Mac anduse the programme Movie Maker. We will need itunes to provide sound effects for our footage.

Narrative

Narrative

During our filming we decided to make changes to the name of our trailer. We did this because we realised while we were filming, our halloween theme was not clear and emphasised enough in our trailer. To avoid any confusion, we decided to change our name to 'The Annonymous' and make some adjustments to the narrative.

Our trailer is about a masked killer who lurks in the park looking for its victims. A pair of teenage girls decide to meet up and take a walk in the park however things go horribly wrong. One of the girls goes mysteriously missing and its up to her friend to find her killer and unmask him.

Our group signed a health and safety form to ensure that we follow the safety rules and we stay safe during our filming. We also carried out a quetionaire asking our target audience what they like about horror movies, what sort of horror movies they watch and what sub-genre interests them most. We used the results to this to come up with our plot and how to film our trailer.
